Casey Stengel - Always a NY Yankee
by Victor Porrello
Casey Stengel an interesting individual with a good sense of humor has been called the smartest man in baseball. He was born in Kansas City, Missouri on July 30, 1890 and named Charles Dillon Stengel. His nickname actually came from his birthplace, KC, a nickname that he was called that eventually became Casey. In the 1950's the sports writers dubbed him "The Old Professor" because of his quick wit. His baseball career began in 1912 and didn't end till 1965.
During Casey's years in baseball he played with the Brooklyn Dodgers, Pittsburgh Pirates, Philadelphia Phillies, and Boston Braves where his playing days ended in 1925. His manager career included managing the Brooklyn Dodgers, Boston Braves and both New York city teams, the Yankees and the Mets. Even through his many years in baseball involved him with different teams during his career his fame and recognition his tied into his stint in New York city with the both the Yankees and the Mets.
Casey Stengel retired from baseball in 1960 leaving the New York Yankees organization. He was talked out of retirement to manage the New York Mets, a team with no chance of winning many games. When mocked about his age and coming out of retirement he quipped, " It's a great honor to be joining the Knickerbockers", a NY team that played it's last game just before the Civil War. Casey may have gotten old but his wit was just as quick as in his younger days. Though the "Amazin Mets",a name Casey gave his team finished last all 4 years of his managing them his popularity remained intact due to his wit and love of the game.
Casey won numerous awards for his accomplishments and contributions to baseball. His uniform #37 was retired by both the Yankees and the Mets and on August 1970 the New York Yankees dedicated a plaque in their Monument Park Stadium that reads " Brightened baseball for over 50 years; with spirit of eternal youth; Yankee manager 1949-1960 winning 10 pennants, 7 world championships including a record 5 consecutive, 1949-1953." In 2009 Casey Stengel was named "The Greatest Character of The Game" not only for his witty personality that he brought to the game but also his contributions to the community.
