How to Keep a Natural Pond Clean

by Tatyana Turner

If your land has a natural pond you might consider yourself very lucky, but remember that even the natural water ponds require some maintenance. With only a little effort the result would be very pleasing, and maintaining is also required because if you don't touch you pond at all it will not only stop being attractive, but also can create potential problems in your backyard. The only ponds that require almost zero effort are those, that have a natural stream or spring in them, on the contrary still ponds could very quickly become hazardous and overrun by bugs.

Maintenance of natural ponds with streams

Ponds that have a stream are very easy to keep clean, however, little maintenance does not mean no work at all. Even if your pond has a constant supply of fresh water, there are some things you should do to keep it clean. For example, there would be times, when the stream dries up, so that the water will develop moss and other vegetation that is not beneficial, often creating a less than pleasant smell. Avoiding this problem is very easy - all you need to do is to install a small water fountain or a spout, so the water gets aerated and cleans itself.

Throwing in a bale of hale keeps natural pond clean - myth or truth?

There is a common misconception that if you throw some hay into your pond it will help to clean it. There is some truth to this - because even small ponds have some tide, so at night the bale of hay floats and collects all dirt and organic matter that it meets. Eventually when it gets heavy enough, it sinks taking all dirt with it. However, if you keep using this method for years, there will be more and more hay collected in your pond and eventually the pond will become very shallow.

Natural ponds are great in attracting wildlife

Even if you do not plan any life forms in you pond, frogs, fish and even ducks could appear out of the blue. Fish shows up because its eggs could be brought by birds. If your have a large backyard pond, you might end up fishing in your own property. And you wouldn't even need to bring any fish into the pond.

One problem most natural ponds have in common is overgrows of aquatic plants. Those should be regularly trimmed so they do not cover all the surface of the pond, blocking the pumps for fountains if you have one. But don't try to remove all vegetation as it is the main food supply for your fish.

Natural ponds could be really fun with only a bit of regular maintenance; it is great to sit under a tree near your pond on a hot summer day. However, if you are not prepared to do any work on your water feature, it probably would be better to dry the pond and replace it with a lawn or gardening beds.
