Fish Pond Pumps - Don't Let Your Pond Go Stagnant and Your Fish Die!

by Adam Callaghan

Fish pond pumps are a crucial part of any backyard pond. Without this, bad things will happen to destroy your beautiful water sanctuary. It's time to learn how to prevent anything from happening to your pond. The main thing to realize is that your pump is the heart of your pond, meaning, you need a good one to keep your pond in working order. Do you know what happens if your pump is not good enough for your pond?

Well, simple, it becomes stagnant, with the potential for bacteria to grow in the water, which it usually does with stagnant pond water. Do you know where mosquitoes like to breed? Well, you guessed it, stagnant pond water is the breeding grounds for swarms of these pests. And there is nothing worse than sitting around your pond, looking down at the fishes, than getting attacked by a swarm of blood sucking pests, that could have easily been prevented.

What you need to check out is how many gallons your pond holds, as this determines the power that you need your pump to be. Lets say that your pond holds about 2000 gallons of water. Now, since we need to have the pump move that amount of water around per hour, to keep it from going stagnant, we need to find a pump that does at least 2000 GPH ( Gallon Per Hour).

You can always get a bigger pump, but for the best results, stick with a pump designed for your size of pond. There are 2 types of pumps you can get:

- submersible; these are pumps that are in the water, and basically don't need any hoses or anything, as it just moves the water around from underneath

- external pumps; these are dry land pumps, that have a lot more power than a submersible, and are the most common ones to use. They are the work horses of the pond pump world, as they have the potential to move large amounts of water in a very short period of time.

So as you can see here, it is a wise choice to have fish pond pumps, which will create a livable environment for all the fishes in your pond. Can you do without one? No, simple as that, in the natural environment water currents are the pumps of lakes, rivers and oceans.

Since this is not possible in a man made backyard pond, I would advise right now to get yourself one, it will make for a better pond in the long run.
