Colorado Rockies Playoff Tickets - Young Guns and Role Players
by Brent Warnken
The Colorado Rockies have their fair share of superstar players. From Todd Helton and Brad Hawpe in the field to Ubaldo Jimenez and Aaron Cook on the mound, there are plenty of recognizable players on the Rockies' roster. But when the playoffs come, the star players aren't the only ones who get attention from the national media. The young guns, the role players, the glue guys-they'll all get some much needed attention. Indeed, the fate of the team's playoff aspirations might live and die on the performance of the more inexperienced and underpaid players.
So it seems logical to ask how these role players are doing individually. That is, how are the individual Rockies hitters and pitchers performing in the lead-up to the postseason? Are some of the lesser-known players on the team in a slump? Are the sluggers getting hot at just the right time? Let's go through the numbers of a couple of the team's non-star players. You can see the Rockies in the postseason by going online to secure Colorado Rockies playoff tickets.
Ian Stewart - Stewart played 81 games for the Rockies last year, but this time around he seems to be much more of a regular face on the field at third. Stewart regularly bats in the second half of the lineup, but in the playoffs every spot in the order is important. So far this year Ian's stats have been decent, and he's shown that he has the power to drive the ball deep. He has 25 home runs, but only a .229 batting average. During the month of September Stewart has found another level of power. His slugging percentage during the past 19 games between the 1st of September and the 26th of September is .545. Ian has six home runs and 11 walks in that time span. While he has been hitting less singles lately, Rockies fans ought to be thrilled that Stewart is slugging hard down the stretch run of the season.
Franklin Morales - If you've been watching the Rockies lately you've probably seen Franklin Morales come out of the bullpen. He's a lefty reliever, and in the playoffs the Rockies will probably run into a situation or two where his services will be much needed. Morales has a season ERA of 3.29, and he's been getting a lot of work in the later part of the regular season. In fact, between September 1 and September 26 Morales has entered 12 games. Of those 12 games in which Franklin pitched in relief, the Rockies won 10. So he's been putting his stamp on some excellent games lately. A few of his outings recently have been rough, including a game against San Francisco on September 16 when he let three runs go by while he was on the mound. However, he's also been brilliant recently. In a six-game span between the 1st of September and the 11th he allowed no earned runs and struck out six batters in six innings of relief.
So there you have it, a couple of the more underrated Rockies players and how they are performing at this stage in the regular season. Will their current paces hold in the pressure of the postseason? Will they help the Rockies get that elusive World Series championship? Get tickets to see for yourself!
