Florence Vintage Selection 2010

by Margherita Nieri

Two times a year, in February and July, the Florentine day and night life is enlighten by the fashionable and cool event Vintage Selection. If you are lucky enough to be in Florence in that days, take a look at the minimalist exhibitions and events space Stazione Leopolda where the fair is held, and in one of the numerous vintage stands from all around the Country, you could even find a piece of fashion art by Pucci, Dior, Gucci, Armani, Versace, Missoni or Roberta di Camerino.

The enjoyable atmosphere reminds of Portobello Road in London or a typical flea market. The place is always crowded with fashion students and enthusiasts searching for old style second-hand high-quality clothes, bags, colored shoes, funny bell-bottomed trousers, 70s dresses, sunglasses, bijoux, jewels and Audrey Hepburn style coats and hats.

In all these years of success Vintage Selection has become one of the most important fairs in the international fashion field, because of all its vintage events and its cultural implications. It is a real must for all the enthusiasts and the fashion collectors and thanks to the combination with Pitti Filati, it has become one of the most longed for events for cool-hunters. Now it is a kind of center of Italian creativity in fashion.

The event today has a downright manifesto based on eight principles:

1. Vintage can find things in attics, cellars and wardrobes: it s the future of the past.

2. Vintage stimulates creativity: for those who sell it and for those who buy it.

3. In Vintage nothing is out of fashion.

4. Vintage style does not come from economic downturn, it s a mind habit.

5. Recycle, repair, reuse: what is old can always have a second life.

6. A vintage object has already a story. A new one is still searching for it.

7. Vintage does not follow trends and has not a deadline.

8. A vintage item has a thousand lives: who is going to use it will give it one more.

Lately these years, the fair has been enriched with a stylish bar where you can always sip a cold drink or a glass of wine and taste gourmet specialties, in particular at aperitif time, surrounded by trendy design pieces of furniture characterized by an incredible originality.

Many fashion designers visit the exhibition to find inspiration for their new collections and to identify new trends: in 2009 the fair hosted the ironic memorabilia of Mao Zedong, protagonist of the special event Mao For Sale ideated by Gherardo Frassa. Instead in 2010, for the first time ever one of the main brands that organize the fair with Stazione Leopolda, will present the event Happy Kilo: buy second hand clothes and pay them according to their weight.

In the special section Remake, some Italian brands sell unique customized vintage clothing, realized using innovative materials and changed with particular treatments, while in the temporary exhibition Fragile Memory Box organized by the Design University in Florence, the Architects Patrizia Tenti and Giuliana Frangipane analyze how used materials can last longer.

Vintage Selection usually hosts more than 40 exhibitors representing the great variety of vintage objects on sale: they mainly come from Florence, Milan, Verona, Bologna and attract more than 10.000 visitors.
